Why outdoor sockets need a proper electrician
- RCD protection is mandatory — any outdoor socket MUST be RCD-protected under BS 7671. We install dedicated 30mA Type A protection at the consumer unit, not a cheap plug-in RCD.
- IP65 or IP66 rating — outdoor sockets must withstand rain, dust, garden debris. Indoor sockets in a “weatherproof box” don’t cut it.
- SWA (steel wire armoured) cable — for buried runs, exposed routes, or anywhere a spade might hit. We never use standard PVC twin-and-earth outside.
- IP67 cable glands — every cable entry into the outdoor enclosure needs a proper compression gland. Otherwise water tracks in and trips the RCD every storm.
- Building Regs Part P notification — outdoor electrical work is notifiable. We notify via NICEIC; you don’t fill out forms.
- Listed building / planning — for visible installs on heritage properties we coordinate consent if required.
Common outdoor socket installs we do
- Patio sockets — bbq, electric heater, music speakers, festive lighting
- Garden tool sockets — lawnmower, hedge trimmer, leaf blower, pressure washer
- Pond & water feature pumps — small dedicated circuit, often with timer or smart-switch control
- Outdoor TV mounts — IP-rated socket + cable for screen, no visible cabling
- Outdoor charging — for cordless tools or guests’ phones; USB-C + 13A combo units
- Hot tubs & saunas — dedicated 32A or 45A circuit, often three-phase for larger units
- Garden offices & cabins — full sub-main with consumer unit in the cabin, multiple sockets + lights + heating
- EV chargers — see our EV charger page
- Security lighting — PIR-triggered floodlights, no-glare LED downlights for steps and entrances
- Festoon & fairy lighting — permanent installations for restaurants, gardens, terraces
What’s included in a standard outdoor socket install
- Site survey — confirm cable route, check existing consumer unit capacity, identify wall penetration points
- Drill external wall for cable entry (clean drill through brickwork, sleeve through cavity if applicable)
- Run cable — either chased internally or surface-clipped in conduit, terminating at the new outdoor socket position
- Install IP65/IP66 socket — mounted at correct height (300-450mm above ground or paving), with IP67 cable gland
- Add dedicated RCD/RCBO at consumer unit (30mA Type A)
- Test — insulation resistance, polarity, Zs, RCD trip time, earth-fault loop impedance
- Seal entry point with intumescent fire mastic both sides
- Issue Minor Works Certificate + Part P notification via NICEIC
- 6 years’ NICEIC installation warranty
Garden offices & cabins — full electrical fit-out
For garden offices (now a top use case post-2020), we typically install:
- SWA armoured cable from your consumer unit to the cabin (buried at 600mm depth in a sand bed, with marker tape)
- Cabin consumer unit — small RCBO unit with 2-4 ways, dedicated isolator at house end
- Sockets — 4-6 IP65 internal sockets, USB charging combos optional
- Lighting — LED downlights, sometimes Lutron Caseta or Hue for smart control
- Heating — wired to dedicated radial for electric heater or AC unit
- Data — Cat6 cable alongside power (separated by 30mm minimum)
- External lighting + bell — IP65 wall light + doorbell wiring
- Full EIC + Part P notification — Building Regs compliant for habitable outbuilding
Typical cost: £1,200-£2,400 for a 2.4m × 3.5m cabin with the above. £2,400-£4,500 for larger 5m+ garden offices.
Common upgrade scenarios — what bumps the price
| Scenario | Cost on top (inc VAT) |

| Buried SWA across garden (per metre, trenching by you) | +£25-£40 per metre |

| Mounting on listed/heritage property with conservation approval | +£180-£480 admin |

FAQ — outdoor sockets London
Can I just use an indoor socket with an extension lead?
For occasional use (lawnmower 20 min), with a manufacturer-approved outdoor extension, yes. For permanent or regular use, no — extension leads aren’t designed for prolonged outdoor exposure and become a trip hazard, fire risk, and breach BS 7671. A proper IP65 socket pays for itself in safety and convenience.
How long does it take?
1-2 hours single socket from existing internal circuit. 3-4 hours new dedicated cable run. Half a day for full garden office fit-out.
Will you make good after drilling?
Yes — clean drill, sealed both sides with appropriate mastic. We don’t plaster but we leave a clean finish ready for redecorating.
Do I need permission from my freeholder if I’m a leaseholder?
Usually yes for any external wall penetration. We can supply technical specs to support your application.
Is the socket safe to leave outside in winter?
Yes — IP65 means it withstands water jets and dust. IP66 is even higher. We don’t fit anything below IP54 outdoors.
What about leaving extension cords plugged in 24/7?
Use weatherproof extension reels or, better, get a second socket installed. Permanent extension cords degrade fast outdoors.
