Grade A, D, and battery-only explained
- Battery-only — DIY-install only, not rental-compliant, fine for owner-occupier.
- Grade D LD3 — mains+battery, interlinked. Minimum for single-let rentals under 2022 regs.
- Grade D LD2 — same plus detectors in every bedroom. Required for small HMOs.
- Grade A LD1 — full panel system with call points. Required for larger HMOs (7+ tenants) or 3+ storey HMOs.
Confused? Send us your property type, bedrooms, storeys — we’ll confirm the grade. Most small London HMOs need Grade D LD2.
