If your Hackney home still has an old rewirable fuse board or a split-load consumer unit from the early 2000s, it almost certainly falls short of current UK safety standards. F & A Electrical replaces outdated fuse boards across Hackney with modern RCBO consumer units to BS 7671 18th Edition standards — usually in half a day, fully certified, fixed price.
From £450 + VAT for a standard 1-bed/2-bed flat. Call 07407 627542 for a free quote.
Why upgrade your fuse board?
Hackney’s housing stock is a mix of Victorian terraces, post-war council builds, and converted warehouses — and each comes with its own electrical history. Here are the most common reasons we replace boards in the borough:
1. Rewirable fuse boards in Victorian terraces. Streets like those around Clapton, Stoke Newington, and Dalston are lined with period properties that still have original wired-fuse boards from the 1960s or earlier. These offer no RCD protection at all — if someone touches a live wire, there is no automatic cut-off.
2. Split-load boards from 1990s-2000s conversions. Hackney saw a wave of flat conversions in the late 1990s, particularly around London Fields and Mare Street. Many were fitted with split-load consumer units that only protect some circuits with an RCD. Under the current 18th Edition wiring regulations, every circuit needs individual RCD protection.
3. Plastic-cased boards in ex-council flats. Properties across estates in Homerton, Clapton, and Hackney Downs often still have plastic consumer units. Since 2016, metal-clad enclosures have been required in new installations to reduce fire risk.

What we fit and why
We replace old boards with all-RCBO consumer units — typically Wylex, Hager, or BG. Each circuit gets its own protection — a fault on the kitchen ring doesn’t kill the lights upstairs. Full RCD coverage with earth faults tripping in under 30ms, Surge Protection Device included, metal-clad enclosure meeting 18th Edition fire-safety requirements.
All work is carried out to Part P Building Regulations standards and self-certified through our NICEIC registration.
