Short answer: UK wiring regulations set no fixed maximum number of sockets on a ring main. BS 7671 limits a standard 32A ring final circuit by floor area — up to 100m² — not by socket count. In practice, what matters is the load you plug in: the circuit can supply about 7.4kW in total, so a kitchen full of high-draw appliances will overload a ring long before the number of sockets becomes the problem.

That surprises a lot of people — and it’s why “can I add another socket?” is really a question about load, layout and spurs, not a number. Here’s how it actually works in 2026.

What the regulations actually say

A standard ring final circuit — 2.5mm² cable, 32A protection — may serve an unlimited number of socket outlets provided the floor area served doesn’t exceed 100m². Most houses run one ring per floor, plus often a dedicated kitchen ring, precisely because kitchens concentrate the heavy loads: kettle (3kW), washing machine (2.2kW), dishwasher, tumble dryer, air fryer. Four of those running together approach the circuit’s practical ceiling on their own.

Spurs: where the real limits bite

Sockets added off the ring (“spurs”) do have rules of thumb from the on-site guidance:

Most “mystery” dead sockets and warm faceplates we trace in North London are botched spur-on-spur additions. If a circuit is misbehaving now, start with our socket not working guide or why does my fuse board keep tripping.

Signs a ring is overloaded (not under-socketed)

Extension leads are the worst answer to too few sockets: a 13A lead feeding a heater and a dryer is a fire risk no regulation blesses.

What adding sockets costs in London (2026)

All labour-only, materials itemised separately; minimum charge £108 (£90 + VAT):

Job Labour-only guide price
Convert single socket to double from £108
Add a spurred socket to an existing ring from £108
Add several sockets around a room from £150–£250 depending on runs
New dedicated circuit (kitchen ring, EV charger, shower) quoted after survey

Frequently asked questions

Is there a legal maximum number of sockets in one room?

No. The 100m² floor-area limit applies to the ring circuit, not any room. A bedroom with twelve sockets on a healthy ring is compliant; a kitchen with six sockets all feeding 3kW appliances on one ring may not cope.

How many spurs can I add to a ring main?

Custom and practice: no more spurs than existing socket points on the ring, one socket per unfused spur, and never spur off a spur without a fused connection unit.

Do I need an electrician to add a socket?

Adding a socket to an existing circuit is non-notifiable in most rooms, so competent DIY is legal — but anything in a kitchen or bathroom zone, a new circuit, or work you’d want evidenced when selling is electrician territory. We certify every addition with the proper paperwork.

How many sockets should a modern house have?

Guidance for new builds suggests 4–6 double sockets in a kitchen, 4 in a living room and 3 per bedroom as a comfortable minimum — most pre-1990 London homes fall well short, which is why extension leads breed behind every TV.
