What we do in N6
Highgate straddles two boroughs — the Village and the west side are Camden, the Archway Road and Shepherds Hill side are Haringey — and it has the oldest housing stock we work on anywhere in North London: Georgian and early-Victorian houses around the Village, many of them listed, alongside the 1920s Holly Lodge estate, the 1970s Whittington estate and big Edwardian houses on the Haringey slopes. The work follows the stock. In the older houses it is sympathetic rewires and board changes — surface-run in period conduit where the fabric can’t be chased, cable routes agreed with the conservation officer, and a Part P-notified job at the end; our rewire cost guide and how long a rewire takes set out what to expect. On Holly Lodge it is consumer unit replacements from £550 labour-only, garden and outbuilding supplies, and EV chargers where the estate’s off-street parking allows — see EV chargers in Haringey. On the Whittington estate and in the converted houses along Archway Road it is landlord EICRs, HMO compliance and shared-supply work, the same pattern as neighbouring Archway. If the power is actually off, our emergency electrician Haringey page covers urgent response on both sides of the borough line.

Period houses in N6: what usually comes up
Three findings account for most of our Highgate write-ups. First, mixed-generation wiring — a 1960s partial rewire spliced onto older cable in the roof and under floors, with the joints hidden in boxes nobody can find; that is a Further Investigation (FI) code, which fails the report exactly like a C2. Second, a plastic or wooden board with no RCD protection serving a house with an outdoor supply to a studio or pool house. Third, no main bonding where lead or plastic water pipes meet, common in houses that have been re-plumbed several times over a century. A board change with RCBOs and bonding clears the second and third in a day; the first is a survey conversation about whether a partial rewire of the affected floors is enough.
Two boroughs, two councils: Highgate landlords
If your property is on the Camden side, Camden’s borough-wide additional HMO licensing applies; on the Haringey side it is Haringey’s additional and selective licensing. Both ask for an EICR less than five years old at application, and since 1 May 2026 the penalty ceiling for breaching the Electrical Safety Regulations is £40,000 per breach, with 28 days to complete remedials after an unsatisfactory report. We issue the report on the day and quote remedials from the schedule. For converted houses, EICRs for leasehold flats and communal areas explains who is responsible for what, and the landlord compliance checklist covers everything else. Frequently asked questions
Which side of Highgate do you cover?
Both — Camden and Haringey, all of N6 plus the N19 and N10 borders. Neighbouring pages: Muswell Hill, Archway, Kentish Town, Crouch End & Hornsey and the N6 postcode page.
Our house is listed — can you still rewire it?
Yes. Listed-building consent covers alterations to the fabric, not the electrics themselves, so the job is planned around routes that don’t disturb historic plaster, panelling or floors: surface conduit in service areas, existing voids, and lifting boards only where they’ve been lifted before. We do a £108 survey and route plan first, which is credited against the job.
Can you rewire while we stay in the house?
Usually — we work floor by floor and leave you a working kitchen and one clean bedroom each night. It adds roughly a day to the programme.
Is there parking?
The Village and Holly Lodge are CPZ on weekdays; most larger houses have a driveway. Tell us the zone when you book; a driveway or visitor permit saves you the parking cost we would otherwise have to add.
