Why NICEIC Approval Matters — How to Pick a London Electrician You Can Trust

NICEIC Approved Contractor is the highest tier of competent-person scheme registration in the UK. It’s the credential lenders, conveyancing solicitors, landlord insurers and Building Control all recognise. Here’s why it matters more than any directory star rating.

What “NICEIC Approved” actually means

• Annual on-site assessment — NICEIC sends an inspector to your premises every 12 months. They check live jobs, paperwork, test equipment calibration, insurance, training records. No assessment = no renewal.
• Qualifications verified — every electrician on the contractor’s books must hold City & Guilds 2391/2394/2395 (or equivalent) and 18th Edition. NICEIC checks the certificates aren’t fake.
• £5m public liability insurance minimum, verified annually
• Sequential certificate numbers — every EICR, EIC, Minor Works Cert NICEIC issues has a serial number traceable on NICEIC’s online register. You can verify any certificate independently.
• 6 years’ workmanship warranty backed by NICEIC — if the contractor disappears, NICEIC honours the warranty up to a cap. Other schemes don’t offer this.
• Part P notification authority — only competent-person-scheme members can self-notify Building Control. Without it, every notifiable job needs Building Control inspection (slow, expensive, often refused).

NICEIC vs Checkatrade vs Rated People vs MyBuilder

NICEIC isn’t a lead-gen platform. It’s a trade body. Checkatrade, Rated People and MyBuilder are lead-gen platforms with star ratings — useful for first impressions, not a substitute for verified trade credentials.

The other competent-person schemes — what they are

NICEIC isn’t the only legitimate route. The schemes accepted under Building Regs Part P for electrical self-certification are:

• NICEIC — largest in UK, originated as the National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting (1956). F & A Electrical is a member.
• NAPIT — National Association of Professional Inspectors and Testers. Similar tier.
• ELECSA — owned by NICEIC since 2014. Same standards, separate branding.
• STROMA — slightly different focus, includes other trades.
• Certsure — umbrella covering NICEIC + ELECSA

All five are equivalent under the regulations. NICEIC has the biggest brand recognition with the public, which is why lenders, solicitors and insurers default to it first.

How to verify an electrician’s NICEIC status

1. Go to www.niceic.com → “Find a Contractor”
2. Enter the business name or postcode
3. If they’re approved, they’ll appear. Click them to see assessment dates, qualifications and contact details.
4. For any certificate they’ve issued, the serial number can be verified on NICEIC’s “Verify a Certificate” page.

What an EICR done by a non-NICEIC electrician means

• The report may still be technically valid IF the inspector held appropriate qualifications
• But mortgage lenders, conveyancing solicitors, landlord insurers may not accept it
• For HMO licensing, councils increasingly require certificates from a competent-person-scheme member
• Part P notification cannot be self-issued, so any installation work needs separate Building Control approval (slower, more expensive)
