EV charger installation in London looks very different in 2026 than it did even two years ago. The grant landscape has been reshaped — some schemes have closed for good, while the ones that survived now pay out more than ever. Meanwhile, install prices have settled into fairly predictable bands, and solutions finally exist for the millions of Londoners without a driveway. This guide covers every current grant, realistic costs for every property type, and the chargers we’re actually fitting across North London and beyond — written by the electricians who do this work every week.
The EV Charger Grant Landscape in 2026: What’s Open, What’s Closed
The headline news for 2026 is good, if you qualify. On 1 April 2026, the Government increased the maximum grant under the main OZEV chargepoint schemes from £350 to £500 per socket, with funding confirmed until 31 March 2027. Here’s where each scheme stands:
EV Chargepoint Grant for renters and flat owners — OPEN. If you rent your home or own a flat, and you have private off-street parking (such as an allocated bay), you can claim 75% of the cost of buying and installing a chargepoint, capped at £500. This remains the single most useful grant for Londoners, given how much of the city lives in flats and rented housing. Note that owner-occupiers of standard houses were removed from this scheme back in 2022 — if you own a semi with a driveway, this one isn’t for you.
EV Chargepoint Grant for households with on-street parking — check current status before relying on it. This scheme extended grant support to households with no off-street parking, provided a permanent cross-pavement charging solution (such as a cable gully) is installed and the local council approves it. The grant rate rose to 75% up to £500 per socket from April 2026, but the scheme’s application windows have shifted during the year, so confirm the current OZEV guidance — or ask us and we’ll check eligibility before you commit to anything.
Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) — OPEN. Extended for a final year to 31 March 2027, the WCS now provides up to £500 per socket for businesses, charities and public-sector organisations, for a maximum of 40 sockets across all sites — up to £20,000 of support. If your business has been putting this off, 2026–27 is realistically the last chance to claim.
Closed schemes. The EV Infrastructure Grant for Staff and Fleets and the Commercial Landlord Chargepoint Grant both closed permanently on 31 March 2026. Residential landlords can still apply under the standard chargepoint grant for rental properties, but the dedicated commercial landlord route has gone.
London borough top-ups. There’s no single London-wide top-up grant, but boroughs are receiving central funding for cross-pavement (gully) schemes, and several — including Haringey, our home borough — have secured funding to subsidise gully materials and installation for residents. If you live in a terrace in N15, N17 or N22, it’s genuinely worth checking your borough’s electric vehicle pages before assuming a home charger is off the table.

Unlike most of our pricing, which is labour-only, the figures below include the charger hardware — because that’s how EV installs are normally quoted. A standard 7kW home installation in London sits in a fairly tight band once you strip out the outliers:

What pushes a quote from the bottom of the band to the top? Usually one of three things: a long cable run between your meter position and the parking spot, an older fuse board that needs a new RCBO or a full replacement (see our guide to fuse board replacement costs in London), or a looped electricity supply shared with a neighbour, which needs the network operator’s involvement. EV Charging by Property Type: What’s Possible Where You Live
House with a driveway
The simplest case. The charger mounts on an external wall near the parking spot, a dedicated circuit runs back to your consumer unit, and most installs are done in half a day. No grant applies for owner-occupiers here, but you also avoid every complication below — and a smart charger on an EV tariff typically pays for itself within a couple of years of off-peak charging.
Terraced house without off-street parking
Historically the dead end — but not any more. Cross-pavement gullies (a slim channel set into the footway that your cable lies in flush with the surface) are now approved in a growing number of boroughs, and the RAC reports almost half of UK councils expect to offer cross-pavement charging by the end of 2026. You’ll need council permission for the gully, and if the on-street parking grant is open when you apply, it can cover 75% of costs up to £500. This is a two-permission job — council for the pavement, OZEV for the grant — so start early.
Flat with an allocated parking space
Usually very doable, and this is exactly who the £500 EV Chargepoint Grant is designed for. The technical challenge is distance: your parking bay may be a long way from your electricity meter, so cable runs and containment often make up a bigger share of the price. You’ll need written permission from the freeholder or managing agent before the grant application goes in — we can supply the technical details they typically ask for.
Flat with communal parking
Here the installation is normally led by the freeholder, managing agent or residents’ association rather than an individual leaseholder. With the commercial landlord grant now closed, the practical route in 2026 is either the residential landlord chargepoint grant (for rented buildings) or a self-funded scheme with load management, where several chargers share the building’s spare electrical capacity intelligently. Getting the electrical design right at the start avoids expensive supply upgrades later.
Commercial premises
Shops, offices, workshops and depots should be looking hard at the Workplace Charging Scheme before it closes in March 2027 — £500 per socket across up to 40 sockets is meaningful money. Most commercial units in London have (or can get) a three-phase supply, which opens up 22kW charging: roughly three times faster than a home unit, and the right choice for fleet vans that need a fast turnaround.

Ohme Home Pro. The tariff-optimiser’s choice. The Home Pro integrates directly with smart EV tariffs (including Intelligent Octopus Go), scheduling your charging automatically for the cheapest half-hours. It’s a tethered unit with a built-in screen and dynamic load management via a CT clamp. If your main goal is the lowest possible pence-per-mile, this is hard to beat.
Pod Point Solo 3S. A long-established British brand with a strong app and a clean, unobtrusive design. Available tethered or with a universal socket, it includes automatic power balancing so it won’t overload your supply. A safe, well-supported choice — particularly popular with drivers who already use Pod Point’s public network.
EO Mini Pro 3. One of the smallest smart chargers on the market — genuinely compact, which matters on a narrow London frontage or where the charger sits in a visible spot. Despite the size it’s fully featured: app control, scheduling and solar compatibility via a CT clamp. Best for tight spaces and design-conscious installs.
myenergi Zappi. The default choice if you have (or plan) solar panels or a home battery. Its ECO modes can divert surplus solar generation straight into your car, and it works perfectly well as a standard smart charger too. It also has built-in PEN fault protection, so no earth rod is needed. Slightly bulkier than the others, but unmatched for solar households.

Easee One. The budget-friendly compact pick. A Scandinavian-designed untethered unit with one of the smallest footprints on the market, automatic phase/load balancing, and the neat trick of running up to three units off one fuse — useful for shared driveways. Sold through approved installers only, so quoted prices vary more than most; typical installed cost lands at the bottom of the London range.
Tesla Wall Connector (Gen 3). Despite the badge, it charges any Type 2 EV, not just Teslas — and at £475–£530 for the unit it’s the cheapest of the premium-build chargers. The catch: it is not eligible for the OZEV chargepoint grant, and it’s happiest inside the Tesla app ecosystem. For a Tesla household, or anyone who wants minimalist hardware at a sharp price, it’s a strong pick.
Hypervolt Home 3 Pro. The premium all-rounder: UK-made, solar-aware charge scheduling, dynamic load management as standard and a customisable LED ring that makes charging status readable from the kerb. The Installation Process, Step by Step
1. Survey. We assess your supply type (single or three-phase, looped or independent), main fuse rating, consumer unit condition, and the cable route from meter to parking spot. Often this can be done from photos; complex jobs get a site visit.
2. Fixed quote and grant check. You get a written price including hardware, and we confirm which grant (if any) applies before any money changes hands.
3. DNO notification. Your electricity network operator must be notified of the new charger. If your supply is looped or your main fuse is undersized, this is where it gets flagged — the DNO usually resolves supply issues free of charge, though it adds lead time.
4. Installation day. Typically 3–5 hours: mounting the unit, running the dedicated circuit, fitting the protective devices, and making the final connection. Power is off for only a short window.
5. Testing and certification. Every circuit is tested and you receive an electrical installation certificate, with the work notified under Part P through our registration. This paperwork is also what the grant claim depends on.
6. Handover. We pair the charger with its app, set up your charging schedule against your tariff, and process the grant claim where applicable — the grant is deducted from your invoice, not claimed back by you afterwards.
