Since the Renters’ Rights Act took full effect on 1 May 2026, the maximum penalty for failing to hold a valid electrical safety certificate is £40,000 per offence, up from the old £30,000 cap. Any C1 or C2 code has to be remedied within 28 days, and written confirmation given to the tenant and to the council.
