Switching to an electric vehicle makes financial sense — but only if you can charge at home. Public chargers in Islington cost 50-80p per kWh. A home charger on an off-peak tariff brings that down to around 7-10p. Over a year of typical driving, that is hundreds of pounds saved.
F & A Electrical installs home EV chargers across Islington — from terraced houses in Highbury to converted flats near Angel. NICEIC approved, Part P certified, from £700.
The Islington challenge: on-street parking
Let’s address the elephant in the room. Most Islington properties — particularly the Victorian terraces across Highbury, Barnsbury, Canonbury, and Holloway — have no off-street parking. If you park on the street, a traditional wall-mounted home charger is not practical.
However, there are still options:
If you have a driveway, front garden, or designated parking space: A standard 7kW wall-mounted charger is the straightforward solution. We mount it on your external wall and run a dedicated circuit from your consumer unit. Most installs are completed in half a day.
If you have rear access or a garage: Some Islington properties — particularly around Highbury New Park and parts of Canonbury — have rear gardens accessible via back lanes. We can install a charger on a garage wall or garden boundary with a longer cable run.
If you park on the street: Islington Council has been rolling out lamp-post and on-street chargers. You can also apply for a residential chargepoint through the council’s scheme. We are happy to advise on the options available for your specific situation.
What we install
We fit 7kW untethered or tethered chargers from leading manufacturers including Easee, Ohme, Hypervolt, and Zappi. All are OZEV-approved and smart-enabled, meaning you can schedule charging for off-peak hours via an app.
- Untethered — the charger has a socket; you plug in your own Type 2 cable. Neater on the wall, works with any EV.
- Tethered — the cable is permanently attached. More convenient (just grab and plug in), but the cable hangs on the wall when not in use.
Most Islington homes have a single-phase supply, which supports a 7kW charger. This adds roughly 30 miles of range per hour of charging — more than enough to fully charge overnight.
Installation process
- Survey — we assess your electrical supply, consumer unit capacity, and the best route for the dedicated EV circuit. For Islington terraces, this usually means running cable from the consumer unit (often under the stairs or in a cupboard) through to the front or rear of the property.
- DNO notification — if your property’s total electrical load exceeds certain thresholds after adding a 7kW charger, we notify the Distribution Network Operator (UKPN in London). This is a legal requirement that we handle for you.
- Installation — a dedicated 32A circuit from your consumer unit to the charger location, protected by its own RCBO. The charger is mounted and commissioned. Typical install time: 3-5 hours.
- Certification — you receive a Part P Building Regulations compliance certificate and an Electrical Installation Certificate for the new circuit.
Costs
| Scenario | Typical cost (inc. VAT) |
|---|---|

Prices include the charger unit, all materials, labour, NICEIC certification, and Part P notification.

Conservation areas
Islington has multiple conservation areas — Barnsbury, Canonbury, Duncan Terrace, and others. Installing an EV charger on the front of a listed or conservation-area property may require additional consideration. In most cases, a discreetly mounted charger in a matching colour does not require planning permission, but we will advise if your situation is different.
