Costs — what you actually pay
A standard install in Tower Hamlets typically costs:

| 7kW Type 2 tethered (cable attached) | £750 – £950 fitted |
| 22kW 3-phase charger (only if your supply supports it) | £1,200 – £1,800 fitted |

Includes:
- Site survey
- The unit itself
- Up to 10m of cable run from your consumer unit
- Type B RCD or DC-fault detection (legally required for EVSE)
- Earth bonding upgrade if needed
- Notification to your DNO (UK Power Networks for most of London)
- NICEIC certificate + Building Control notification
May add to cost:
- Cable run over 10m (£25/m extra)
- Consumer unit upgrade if existing board is full (£450-£650 — see fuse board replacement)
- Trenching for off-street installs (rare in Tower Hamlets)
OZEV grant — when it applies
The EV Chargepoint Grant (formerly OZEV) gives £350 off for some property types. As of 2026:
- Available for: flats with off-street parking, rented properties, and some leasehold houses
- Not available for: owner-occupied freehold houses (this changed in 2022)
- You don’t claim it directly — we deduct it from your invoice and reclaim from the government
If you’re a landlord or live in a flat, you almost certainly qualify. If you own your own house outright, you don’t. We’ll confirm on the survey.

How the install works
Day 0 — Free survey (in person or by photo on WhatsApp)
We check your fuse board’s spare capacity, the proposed charger location, and the cable route. 15-30 min for in-person, 5 min for photo survey. Quote within an hour.
Day of install (half day, usually 9am-1pm)
- Isolate at the consumer unit
- Run the cable from board to charger location (chased into walls, surface trunking, or external clipped)
- Fit the charger to the wall, anchor properly
- Wire and commission, including the Type B RCD or DC-fault detection
- Test, certify, configure the charger app on your phone
- Notify your DNO (UK Power Networks) — required for any unit over 3.6kW
Same day — you start charging.
Why people in Tower Hamlets use us
- NICEIC accredited — required by all DNOs for EV install notifications
- OZEV-approved installer — we can claim the grant for you on the spot
- Type B RCD as standard — many cheap installers fit Type A which doesn’t comply for some inverter-driven chargers (you’d fail the next EICR)
- Full DNO notification handled by us — saves you a paperwork chase
- One day from quote to install in many cases
Frequently asked questions
Can I install a 22kW (faster) charger at home?
Only if your property has a 3-phase supply, which most domestic properties in Tower Hamlets don’t. We can check with UK Power Networks during the survey. If you have single-phase (the standard), 7kW is the maximum.
How long does it take to charge an EV from a 7kW home charger?
Roughly 6-8 hours for a typical EV battery (e.g. 75 kWh) from 20% to 80%. Most people charge overnight on Octopus Go or Intelligent for ~7p/kWh = ~£3 for a full charge.
Can I claim it back through my limited company?
Yes — if F & A Electrical Ltd (or your company) buys it, it’s a tax-deductible expense. Plus your business pays no Benefit-in-Kind on charging an EV used personally. This is huge for owners using a company-funded EV.
Do I need planning permission?
No, EV chargers are permitted development for most homes. Conservation areas and listed buildings can be different — we flag during the survey.
What if my consumer unit is full?
We either upgrade the board (see fuse board replacement) or fit a “henley block” + sub-circuit if there’s spare capacity at the meter. We’ll walk you through options on the survey.
Will it bump up my electricity bill?
Yes — you’ll be using more power. But on Octopus Intelligent or similar EV tariff, charging overnight at ~7p/kWh is roughly a fifth of petrol cost per mile. Even on a standard tariff at 27p/kWh, EV running costs are about half of an equivalent petrol car.
Tethered or untethered?
Tethered = cable permanently attached to the charger. Convenient — just plug into the car, don’t faff with a separate cable. Good for one-EV households.
Untethered = no cable, you bring your own each time. Cleaner look, future-proof if you change cars (different connectors). Cable goes in the boot when not in use.
We can fit either — the cost is similar (£50 difference).
