Faulty electrical wiring is one of the leading causes of house fires in the UK. Knowing the warning signs can protect your family and your property. Here are seven signs that your wiring may be dangerous and needs professional attention.
1. Flickering or Dimming Lights
Occasional flickering when a large appliance kicks in is normal. But persistent flickering, especially across multiple rooms, suggests loose connections or deteriorating wiring. This is particularly common in London properties built before the 1970s.
2. Burning Smell or Scorch Marks
A burning smell near sockets, switches, or your consumer unit is a serious warning sign. Brown or black scorch marks on faceplates indicate overheating, which can lead to fire. If you notice this, turn off the circuit immediately and call an electrician.
3. Sockets or Switches That Feel Warm
Electrical fittings should never feel warm to the touch during normal use. Warmth indicates either an overloaded circuit, a loose connection, or deteriorating wiring behind the faceplate.
4. Frequently Tripping Circuit Breakers
If your MCBs or RCD trips regularly, it is detecting a fault. While occasional trips can happen, frequent tripping suggests a persistent problem such as a short circuit, earth fault, or overloaded wiring.
5. Buzzing or Crackling Sounds
Electrical systems should operate silently. Buzzing, crackling, or sizzling sounds from sockets, switches, or your consumer unit indicate arcing, which is electricity jumping across a gap in a loose or damaged connection. This is a fire risk.
6. Old-Style Round Pin Sockets or Fabric Cables
If your property still has round-pin sockets, fabric-covered cables visible in the loft, or a fuse box with rewirable fuses, the wiring is almost certainly decades old and potentially dangerous.
7. Electric Shocks From Switches or Appliances
Even a mild tingle when touching a switch or appliance indicates a fault in the earthing or wiring. This should be investigated immediately as it could indicate a potentially lethal fault.
What Should You Do?
If you notice any of these signs, book an EICR inspection. This will identify exactly what is wrong and what needs fixing. Do not attempt to investigate electrical faults yourself.
