What we do in EN3
EN3 is the eastern strip of Enfield between the Great Cambridge Road and the River Lea, and the work follows the housing. Along the Hertford Road and the side streets off Ponders End High Street, South Street and Southbury Road the stock is late-Victorian and Edwardian terraces, plenty of them split into flats or let as family houses, so consumer-unit changes, partial rewires and landlord EICRs are the everyday call. Enfield Highway, Enfield Wash and the Durants Park and Carterhatch side are mostly interwar council-built cottage estates and 1930s semis — many now privately owned — where the original wiring has usually been replaced once, often in the 1970s or 80s, behind a board that has never been upgraded. Around Ponders End station and the High Street there are the post-war council blocks and the newer regeneration flats, where the work is fault-finding, fuse-board changes and EICRs for leaseholders and buy-to-let owners. Enfield Island Village, built on the old Royal Small Arms Factory site at Enfield Lock, is 1990s and 2000s housing that is now at the age where its first boards and first EICRs are due. And the Brimsdown, Innova Park and Ponders End industrial estates keep us busy with commercial EICRs, three-phase fault-finding and unit fit-outs. Borough-wide pricing is on the EICR Enfield page; this one is the EN3 detail.

EN3 wiring: what usually comes up
Four findings account for most of the reports we write in EN3.
The 1970s or 80s rewire behind an old board. The interwar houses in Enfield Highway and Enfield Wash were mostly rewired once, decades ago. The PVC cable often still tests fine, but the board is a plastic-cased unit with rewireable fuses or one RCD across everything, so a single fault in the kitchen or garden takes out the whole house. That is a C2 on the socket and bathroom circuits, and the fix is normally an RCBO consumer unit from £550 labour, not a rewire. We test before quoting, so you are not sold a rewire you do not need.
Converted terraces with a shared or tangled supply. Off the Hertford Road and around Ponders End High Street a lot of terraces have been split into two or three flats, sometimes with one meter feeding more than one flat, or a communal light run off a tenant’s circuit. That is a problem for any landlord EICR, and it is sorted with a landlord’s supply and separate boards — the options and costs are on our landlord’s board and split supply guide.
DIY additions on 1930s semis. Rear extensions, garage conversions and loft rooms wired off the nearest socket ring, with no RCD, no bonding and no certificate. They turn up regularly on pre-sale EICRs on the Durants Park and Carterhatch side. Usually a dedicated circuit from £180 labour, tested and certified, puts it right.
Outbuildings on the long back gardens. Sheds, workshops and garden rooms fed by an extension lead or twin-and-earth clipped along the fence. That is a C2 every time; the proper fix is armoured cable to a small board in the outbuilding. Our garage and outbuilding guide explains what the EICR does and does not cover.
Landlords, leaseholders and sellers in EN3
Private renting is a big part of EN3, and landlords here need a satisfactory EICR under five years old for every let, a copy to the tenant within 28 days, and remedial work finished within 28 days of the report — with penalties of up to £40,000 per breach since 1 May 2026. Enfield runs additional HMO licensing across the borough, and HMO licence packages (EICR, emergency lighting and fire alarm checks) are a common request along the Hertford Road. If you are not sure whether your address sits inside a council licensing scheme, check with Enfield Council before assuming a single let is exempt. If a tenant will not let us in, our guide on a tenant refusing access for the EICR sets out what counts as reasonable steps.
For sellers, you do not legally need an EICR to sell a house, but a satisfactory report stops a buyer’s survey coming back with “rewiring recommended” and a price chip a month into the sale — see EICRs when selling a house. We can usually get one done within the week.
Brimsdown, Innova Park and the EN3 industrial estates
The eastern side of EN3 is a large block of industrial land: Brimsdown, Innova Park by Enfield Lock, and the units around Ponders End along the Lee Valley. The work there is commercial and industrial EICRs for insurers and landlords, three-phase fault-finding on machinery and compressors, new distribution boards and sub-mains for fit-outs, emergency lighting and PAT testing for staff. We price commercial EICRs by circuit rather than by guess — the method and the numbers are on the commercial EICR cost page, and the industrial unit EICR guide covers the questions insurers ask. Out-of-hours testing can be arranged so the unit keeps working.
Frequently asked questions
Which parts of EN3 do you cover?
All of it: Ponders End, Enfield Highway, Enfield Wash, Enfield Lock, Enfield Island Village, Freezywater, Turkey Street, Brimsdown, Innova Park, Durants Park and the Carterhatch side. Neighbouring areas have their own pages — Enfield Town EN1/EN2, Edmonton N9/N18, Winchmore Hill N21 and, across the Lee Valley, Chingford E4.
How quickly can you get to Ponders End or Enfield Lock?
From Tottenham it is about twenty minutes up the A10 or the Hertford Road outside rush hour. Most booked work is same-week, and genuine emergencies — no power, a burning smell, a board that will not reset — are usually reached the same day. See emergency electrician Enfield.
My ex-council house still has the old fuse box. Do I need a rewire?
Often not. Most interwar houses in Enfield Highway and Enfield Wash were rewired in PVC decades ago, and that cable can still test well. We test first; if the circuits are sound, a new RCBO consumer unit from £550 labour is usually the fix. If the tests show rubber cable or failing insulation, we tell you which circuits need replacing and quote a fixed price.
Do you install EV chargers in EN3?
Yes, on houses with off-street parking — a 7 kW charger is from £450 labour, with the unit at trade cost. We check the supply fuse, fit load management where the house is on a 60 A fuse, and handle the notification to UK Power Networks. Details are on the Enfield EV charger page.
Is there parking?
Most residential streets in EN3 are free to park on. Around Ponders End and Enfield Lock stations and the High Street there are some controlled zones; we use a visitor permit where the property has one, and tell you before the visit if a parking cost will be added.
Electrician for Ponders End, Enfield Highway and Enfield Lock from £108, EICRs from £140, fuse boards from £550, labour-only — see all the areas we cover. Call 07407 627542 or WhatsApp a photo of your fuse board and we will quote from it.
