The UK’s Wiring Regulations Just Got a Major Update

On 15 April 2026, the IET and BSI published Amendment 4 to BS 7671:2018 — the standard that governs how all electrical installations are designed, installed, and tested across the UK. As a NICEIC-accredited electrical contractor working across London, F & A Electrical is already up to speed with the changes. Here’s what they mean for you.

What Is BS 7671?

BS 7671, commonly known as the IET Wiring Regulations or the 18th Edition, is the national standard for electrical installations in the UK. Every electrician, contractor, and inspector must follow these rules to ensure that wiring in homes, offices, shops, and industrial premises is safe. When you hire a qualified electrician, the work they carry out should comply with this standard.

Key Changes in Amendment 4

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)

For the first time, BS 7671 includes a dedicated chapter covering the installation of battery energy storage systems. With the rise of home batteries paired with solar panels, this was long overdue. The new rules address thermal runaway mitigation and fire risk, safe isolation procedures for maintenance, and restrictions on where battery racks can be placed in domestic properties. If you’re considering a home battery system in London, make sure your installer is aware of these new requirements.

Power over Ethernet (PoE)

Amendment 4 introduces new guidance for PoE installations — the technology that powers devices like IP cameras, Wi-Fi access points, and VoIP phones through network cables. This is particularly relevant for London businesses upgrading their office IT infrastructure.

Medical Locations

Section 710 covering medical locations has been substantially revised. If you manage or own a clinic, dental surgery, or healthcare facility in London, it’s worth having your electrical installation reviewed against the updated requirements.

ICT and Earthing

A new section on functional earthing and equipotential bonding for information and communication technology equipment has been added, reflecting how integral IT systems have become to modern buildings.

Timeline: When Do the Changes Take Effect?

Amendment 4 can be implemented immediately. The previous version — BS 7671:2018+A2:2022+A3:2024 — will be formally withdrawn on 15 October 2026. This gives a six-month transition window, but there’s no reason not to comply with the updated standard from day one.
