Fuse Board Replacement Camden — Modern RCBO Consumer Units from £450
If your fuse board still has old-style wired fuses or hasn’t been changed in 15+ years, it almost certainly doesn’t meet current UK regulations and isn’t protecting your home from earth faults. F & A Electrical replaces fuse boards across Camden with modern RCBO-protected consumer units to BS 7671 18th Edition standards — usually in half a day, fully certified, fixed price.
From £450 + VAT for a standard 1-bed/2-bed property. Call 07407 627542 for a free quote.
Why your old fuse board needs replacing
Three signs yours is past its useful life:
1. It still has rewirable fuses (wires you have to replace yourself). These haven’t been allowed in new builds since the 1960s and don’t trip fast enough to prevent fire on a sustained fault. Insurers can decline claims if a property still has them.
2. It has cartridge fuses (the small porcelain ones). Better than rewirable, but still no RCD protection — meaning if you (or a child) touch a live wire, there’s no automatic cut-off.
3. It’s a “split-load” board fitted between 1990 and 2010. These have RCD protection on some circuits but not others. Current regs (BS 7671 18th Edition) require all final circuits to be RCD-protected — which means upgrading to an RCBO board (each circuit individually protected).
What we fit and why
We replace old boards with modern all-RCBO consumer units (typically Wylex, Hager, or BG depending on supply). RCBO = Residual Current Breaker with Overcurrent — combines a fuse and an RCD into one device per circuit. Benefits:
- Each circuit is independently protected. A fault on the kitchen circuit doesn’t kill the lights upstairs.
- All circuits have RCD protection. Earth faults trip in 30ms — fast enough to prevent electric shock injury.
- Surge protection included as standard. Protects expensive electronics from voltage spikes (lightning, supply faults).
- Tested and certified to BS 7671 18th Edition. You get a Minor Works certificate for the install.

- Minor Works certificate emailed to you
- Notification to Building Control via Part P self-certification (no separate council inspection needed)
- 1-year workmanship guarantee on top of NICEIC Platinum Promise

- Major remedial work if existing wiring is dangerous (rare; if found, we quote separately before doing it)
- Out-of-hours premium (Saturday/Sunday/Bank Holiday adds 25%)
How long it takes
Most board changes are half a day on site — typically 9am arrival, finished by lunchtime. Power is off for the whole change (usually 3-4 hours) — we’ll confirm timing on the call so you can plan around freezers and home offices. We run a temporary lead from a neighbour or external supply if you absolutely need power during the change.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need planning permission?
No. Fuse board replacement in a domestic property is permitted development. We notify Building Control via Part P self-certification — that’s included in the price.
Will my power be off for the whole day?
No — typically 3-4 hours. We’ll plan with you in advance to minimise impact (e.g. freezers, home working). For longer outages we run a temporary feed.
Can you fit a “smart” consumer unit?
Yes — we install boards with WiFi/app monitoring (Hager Witty, etc.) on request. Adds £150-£250 to the cost. Useful if you want to monitor power use per circuit.
What if the existing wiring is dodgy?
We do a quick inspection before fitting the new board. If we find something dangerous (typically perished cable in pre-1970s houses), we’ll quote remedial work separately and let you decide. We won’t fit a new board to dangerous wiring without telling you.
Do you give a guarantee?
Yes — 1 year workmanship guarantee on the install, plus NICEIC’s 6-year Platinum Promise on the work itself. The board manufacturer (Wylex/Hager) gives 5-10 years on the unit.
Is there a grant or rebate available?
For most domestic boards — no. If you’re upgrading specifically to support an EV charger or a heat pump, the OZEV grant or BUS scheme can sometimes contribute to associated electrical work. We’ll flag this if it applies to your job.
